Tips for a Healthy Mouth in the Summer

6/20/2017

Summertime is here!  And so is the opportunity for helping your children learn to care for their teeth. The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends three ways you can help your children keep their beautiful smiles despite the summer.
  • First, be sure to continue brushing.  It's easy with the changes in routine to forget brushing and flossing. Try to brush and floss your children's teeth at least twice a day with fluoride toothpaste.
  • Second, limit grazing and sugary drinks.  Soda, lemonade, Cool-Aid and other sugary drinks can cause damage quickly to your child's teeth. Snacking during the day leaves plenty of fuel for the bacteria that cause decay.  Be careful, especially, of fruit gummies  and other chewy foods that may seem healthy but are full of sugar and stick to the teeth.
  • Make your regular exam and cleaning dental appointment early. Everyone wants to have an exam and cleaning right before school starts, so be sure to make your appointment early so that we can be sure to see your family.
For more information from the ADA, click on the picture below.   And from the staff at Creedmoor Family Dentistry, we hope you have a wonderful summer!

Dental Trivia of the Day

How much saliva does the average person produce every day?

A QUART!

That means that in your life, you may produce over 10,000 gallons of saliva! Why is saliva important? Saliva cleans your teeth, neutralizes acids in your mouth and prevents bad breath.

Sippy Cups

Sippy cups! All of my kids used sippy cups, of course. As much as our kids love juice and other sweet drinks, and could on occasion have those safely with a meal, my recommendation for your children is water only in the sippy cup, so that sugar isn't pooling in your child's mouth and causing decay.

And the bonus? It's so much easier to clean the sippy cup when your child is done!

How Much Toothpaste for Children?

Our recommendation is for parents to continue brushing and flossing a child's teeth at least until the age of eight.  This ensures proper brushing and additionally creates good habits.  If you would like to know how to brush and floss your child's teeth better, we are happy to help!

Additionally, did you know that too much swallowed toothpaste can be unsafe?  Parents should help their kids follow the recommendation from the American Dental Association below.

Tooth trivia:  Did you know that George Washington had dentures?  Contrary to the myth, his dentures were not made of wood, but were made of human and cow teeth, and even elephant ivory.  If you're curious, read more here:  http://www.snopes.com/george-washington-wooden-teeth/
